The world's heaviest silver coin did not begin with a blueprint. It began with a question.

When Tarek Saab, CEO and Co-founder of Texas Precious Metals, first conceived of the project, the goal was clear: create something worthy of the 250th anniversary of American independence. The answer his team arrived at was anything but simple - a 2,500 troy ounce, .9999 fine silver coin that would require months of engineering, custom tooling, and a manufacturing process that pushed the limits of what a private mint had ever attempted.

"It's the 250th anniversary of the country, and we started thinking, what can we do to celebrate American exceptionalism," Saab said. "We live in Texas. Everything's bigger in Texas. And so we thought, what would it take for us to make the world's heaviest silver coin?"

The answer came from Sunshine Minting.

Where It Started

The project originated approximately six months before the July 1, 2026, certification ceremony in Austin, when Saab brought the concept to Tom Power at Sunshine Minting with a defined ambition: create something worthy of America's 250th anniversary and produce the largest silver coin ever made.

Power tasked his engineering team with a direct question: what was the largest coin their CNC machines and furnace could physically produce? After running the calculations, Sunshine Minting's engineers arrived at an upper limit of approximately 5,500 troy ounces.

"That's really where it started," Saab said.

The final coin came in at 2,500 troy ounces - the result of engineering requirements that balanced the ambition of a record attempt against the practical constraints of the manufacturing process. Every dimension, every specification, and every design element had to be achievable at a scale no private mint had previously attempted.

The Engineering Challenge

Producing a coin at this scale required solving problems that do not exist at standard minting dimensions. An 18-inch diameter coin with a reverse proof finish, consistent .9999 silver purity, and precise dimensional tolerances across its entire surface demanded equipment, processes, and expertise that Sunshine Minting had to develop specifically for this project.

The numbers tell the story: 448 man-hours of stone and polish work. 168 consecutive hours per side of CNC machining. Each side of the coin required a full week of uninterrupted machine time just to achieve the finish and detail required for a reverse proof certification.

"It was a process. It was certainly a process," Saab said. "The engineering feat that had to go into designing and making sure that we had the equipment to be able to pull this off with Sunshine Mint, our partners."

CNC machining at this scale presents challenges that compound as size increases. Surface consistency becomes more difficult to maintain across an 18-inch diameter than across a standard 1-ounce round. Temperature variations, tooling wear, and material behavior at volume all had to be managed within tolerances tight enough to meet Guinness World Records adjudication standards.

The reverse proof finish added another layer of complexity. A reverse proof - in which design elements are frosted and the background is mirror-polished, the inverse of a standard proof coin - requires multiple polishing and die preparation stages. Achieving that finish on a coin weighing more than 170 lbs. (77.76 kg) required custom tooling and processes that Sunshine Minting developed from the ground up.

The Certification

On July 1, 2026, at Arena Hall in Austin, Texas, Guinness World Records adjudicator Michael Empre traveled from New York to oversee the official weighing and certification of the completed coin.

"After the professional weighers took their surveying and measurements of the coin, I can now announce that Texas Precious Metals and Sunshine Minting had a final measurement of 173 pounds and 14 ounces," Empre announced to the assembled crowd. "They blew that minimum out of the water - and it is a new Guinness World Records title."

The record weight was verified using a Rice Lake Weighing Systems Definity High Precision Scale, provided by D&G Scale - precision industrial equipment specified to remove any doubt about the legitimacy of the record.

Both Texas Precious Metals and Sunshine Minting are recognized jointly by Guinness World Records for the achievement, reflecting the collaborative nature of a project that required two companies operating at the top of their respective disciplines.

The Finished Coin

The result of 448 man-hours of polishing, 168 consecutive hours of CNC machining per side, and months of engineering and planning is a coin that Saab simply describes as "an absolute piece of art."

Every detail of the America 250 coin was chosen with deliberate symbolism. Saab described the design: "In the coin itself, we celebrate the 50 stars for the 50 states, the 13 arrows for the 13 original colonies, and the reeded edge has 250 reeds on it to celebrate the 250 years. The obverse has the Statue of Liberty. It's something we're really proud of - and we're world record holders."

The coin measures 18 inches in diameter and 2.5 inches thick. It carries a $250 legal-tender face value and a reverse proof finish. At 2,500 troy ounces of .9999 fine silver, its melt value is sensitive to daily silver price movements - every $1 change in the silver spot price moves the coin's intrinsic metal value by $2,500.

What It Represents

The America 250 coin is the largest privately minted silver legal tender coin in American history. It also demonstrates what American manufacturing, craftsmanship, and precision engineering can produce when a project's ambition matches the capabilities of the people behind it.
